This horseshoe was found whilst metal detecting near buxton in the peak district, it dates from around 1250 , the early shoes used a T shaped nail whereas the later ones used a spiked nail, which became know as a frosty nail, for use in icy weather, we use tungsten pins now , but there is an old box of frostys still in the forge.
These shoes continued to be used up until the seventeenth century and there was many variations in different
counties of the country.
When charles 2nd arrived in lyme regis after the battle of worcester , he was almost captured, as a smith remarked “what manner of man are you whose horse has been shod in three different counties” and one of them being worcester!
