Venice is the place to go for examples of beautifull handforged blacksmithery, 90% of the buildings adorn well made ironwork being either door hardware or window grills, and its not only churches and public buildings its humble private residences too.
I do find it frustrating that so many homes it the uk are designed without the thought of finishing them with well executed ironwork rather than all the B&Q metalwork you see, after all ironwork is the salt and pepper of artchitecture.
