Horse Shoe Nails

Darren Ainsworth • June 26, 2013

This is a modern horseshoe nail on the left and a celtic/saxon replica on the right ,the modern nail sits almost flush in the fullering, where as the celtic nail sits proud to provide traction along with the calkins at the heels of the shoe, the smith now buys their nails readymade , the celtic smith would of forged their own.

There is historical evidence in 1235 walter le bruin farrier, had a piece of land granted in the strand by henry 3rd, on which he was given permission to put up a forge on account that he payed a yearly quit-rent of six horseshoes with the nails thereto belonging.
